Phuket
is Thailand's largest island and lies in the Andaman
Sea off the country's south-western coast. It has
many beautiful beaches and the best of them located
all along the west coast. Each beach in Phuket has
its own unique characteristic. To name a few:
Patong
Beach
Situated at a distance of 15 km from the town. This
is the most famous and developed beach which is
the center of the island's nightlife. It offers
numerous activities like leisure, water sports,
shopping and recreational options along its 3-km
long crescent bay. It has a wide range of accommodation.
For dining out, a number of moderately priced seafood
restaurants provide great sea-views along the beach
road. Swimming Windsurfing, snorkeling, sailing,
and sunbathing are readily enjoyable at this well
organised and serviced beach resort area.
Karon
Beach
The second largest of Phuket's tourist beaches is
10 minutes south of Patong Beach. The sand is very
white, and makes a sound when walked upon. The southern
point has a fine coral reef stretching toward Kata
and Bu Island. For accommodation there are a number
of large resort complexes. Karon is fairly quiet
and relaxed with some good local restaurants.
Kata
Beach
This beach is located at a distance of 20 km from
the town. Kata is a scenic gem, its clear water
flanked by hills, and picturesque Bu island sits
offshore. Kata village, close to the beach retains
a cosy atmosphere with clusters of restaurants,
bars, and small resorts.
Kamala
Beach
The perfect romantic hideaway where is quiet and
peaceful. Kamala was a small quiet, fishing village,
but it has expanded rapidly during the last few
years, but still retains its village atmosphere
and a scenic, unspoiled beach. Kamala is an ideal
place to relax, enjoy good food and watch the fishermen.
Surin
Beach
Surin is a popular beach and weekend spot. A number
of casuarinas pine trees lies adjacent to the beach
area. Surin has a few guest houses and a number
of beachside local restaurants. The steep incline
of the beach, turbulent water, and big waves make
Surin a dangerous place to swim.
Laem
Sing Beach
This beach is a small rocky bay, popular with Thais
at the weekend. The snorkeling though is excellent
and the restaurants run by a couple of local families
have great local food in high season.
Mai
Khao
Almost 10 kilometers of deserted beach characterize
Mai Khao where there is little tourist business.
Mai Khao offers peace and serenity for the independent
traveler. This lonely beach is another area where
sea turtles come to lay eggs. The sea here is good
for swimming in the dry season.
